making cupcakes from my favorite cake recipes

Anything I should watch out for? Should I use paper liners? Are there any general principles on what I'd have to change to make the recipe work? Any formula for the yield in cupcakes from a 9" layer? If I wait until a toothpick comes out clean, will they be overdone? Do I use the same oven temperature, or do I have to cook them faster like you do muffins?

Any wisdom appreciated!
