Makan, Malaysian in DC - Report

Steve | Oct 17, 202103:35 PM     1

Two things stand out immediately with the food at Makan;

1: It's an excellent restaurant.
2: This is the polite version of Malaysian cuisine.

We were there for brunch and ordered:
Biscuits with kaya
Roti Banjir
Char Kway Teow
Acar with pineapple, ginger, fennel
Acar with mixed vegetables, balacan, peanut
Hot milk tea

Starting off with the best: you have to kiss a lot of frogs in the biscuit world to finally get to your prince, in this case the best I've ever had which are very tall square biscuits with great crust and a tender layered interior. Forget all those places with the word 'biscuit' in their name. They are trash. The kaya is a sweet custard that's liquid. Add on the acar, and you've got the makings of a truly fine meal right there.

The Char Kway Teow are really nicely flavored flat rice noodles with ultra crispy Chinese sausage. A tiny bit of kick to it, all the flavors well balanced and so well executed.

The Roti banjir is a drowned bread dish that is also excellent. A few fun components like a runny egg make this a treat.

So it was a super enjoyalbe meal. But.... it was also quite timid. No salt or shrimp or fermented flavor from the balancan (did they forget this?) in the acar. Also couldn't detect the peanut. And don't expect much in the way of ginger flavor (or fennel for that matter) from the other acar. The sambal that is mixed in with the roti banjir is without character. No noticeable pandan flavor in the kaya. Every choice that's made is to be as inoffensive as possible.

So it's an excellent restaurant, but unlike Thip Khao, it's an unimportant restaurant. I will most definitely return, but it is not transportive.
