In many cities out west, like L.A and Vegas, restaurants have A B and C grades posted for cleanliness ratings, and the newspapers print the latest closures and demerits. On a recent trip to Maine, I noticed a lot of less-than-stellar standards in the dining establishments. Does Maine do any sort of restaurant inspection? I don't think we ever walked into a sandwich or pizza shoppe where the attendant who handled the cash didn't also just walk away from the cash register and start building the sandwich. Ice Cream places were the same, first the hands on the money, then the hands on the cone. In one place we even saw someone barehand-slap a raw burger patty onto a grill, then proceed immediately over to building a ham sandwich. I would imagine that this beautiful state has its fair share of foodborne illness!
