Mail order beef -- any good?

GregJ | Sep 28, 2004 09:48 AM

Yesterday we received in the mail a catalog from "Allen Brothers (Great Steakhouse Steaks since 1893") -- a Chicago firm that apparently supplies some well known restaurants around the country (e.g., the Prime Rib, Eli's, and Charlie Trotter's) with beef. Most of their beef is wet-aged, though they do offer some dry-aged, as well). One specific question: Has anyone tried Allen Brothers' mail order beef and, if so, how was it? In particular, does it approach (as it should, given the prices) steak house quality? More generally, are there other mail order purveyors "out there" who offer beef products that exceed in quality what one might find at a good local butcher's shop? If so, who are they? (I ask because several years ago we bought some meat from Omaha Steaks -- which we found disappointing.)
