I rarely slam a restaurant after a bad experience, whether it’s for poor food or service, but something egregious happened. My friends and I experienced it this weekend on our 1st visit to Magoo’s Island Grille, on Neapolitan Way in the Park Shore Resort.
The waitress came over and told us it was happy hour, with reduced drink prices. She recommended the Magooritas, which 3 of us ordered straight up, however they all came on the rocks. Not a big deal as they were very good and the restaurant was slammed due to a recent write up in a local paper. After our 1st round, we asked if we could order another round before happy hour ended. The server apologized and said she neglected to mention that the Magooritas weren’t included in happy hour, only the well drinks. At this time, the owner’s wife stopped by to take our order. As the wine and beer list was mediocre, we brought a bottle of wine, expecting to pay corkage. My wife is in the wine trade and we are always respectful by bringing something that won’t be on their wine list and ordering either cocktails, or additional glasses or bottles of wine. The owner’s wife stated that because they have a full liquor license it’s against the law to bring wine. I politely said that’s not true, as we have been to numerous full liquor license restaurants in the area which allow corkage. However, I said if that was Magoo’s policy its ok, not a problem. She replied if you don’t like the policy you can take your wine elsewhere. I restated that I totally understood if that’s your policy and we would order from the wine list. She then went on a rant that she’s from New Jersey and they do things different there and that she paid $290,000 for her liquor license and that we are more than welcome to go elsewhere with our wine. She stormed away. We debated on leaving but decided to give them a try. That’s when things really went downhill. We ordered a 2nd round of Magooritas which arrived looking and tasting completely different from the 1st. We also ordered Caesar salads and hamburgers, medium rare. The food came out all at once and the burgers were well done. We could either eat our salads or let our burgers get cold, or eat burgers first followed by salad, French style. Didn’t think this was a French restaurant! We ate our food and left.
On the way out, I told the wife that there was no need to be rude to us as I didn’t argue with the wine policy. We simply asked a question and weren’t confrontational. I said we won’t be returning and I will be writing about this on Trip Advisor and Chowhounds. She said “who cares nobody reads it anyways.”
A man came up saying he’s Magoo. When I told him what happened he apologized and said his wife was just having a bad day because the restaurant was slammed and she’s not usually like that. After stating that’s a poor excuse to be rude he said he hoped I would come back and give it another try.
Magoo’s has some serious service problems, mediocre food, and the worst beer and wine list around. The 20 odd screaming kids in the pool don’t add to the ambiance, and neither does the management. They don’t deserve any patronage.
