Magic Bites Bakery now open

Edokko | Sep 5, 201507:43 AM     1

A Turkish bakery has just opened in Arlington. The spot has seen much turnover recently (Bella Moto, Loukoumaki, Zaatar) and I was sad to see the last one go, since they had some pretty good Armenian items, especially savory pastries. But our first sampling from Magic Bites has shown excellent potential. We got three kinds of gozleme (potato, cheese, and meat), which is like a Turkish quesadilla. The fillings of all three types had a good spicy kick to them, which was a nice surprise. The real standout was the muhammara, which is a tangy, smooth, red spread made from red peppers, pomegranate, onions, lemon juice, and bread crumbs. It had a bright cumin bouquet and I found it to be quite addictive. We also got the baklava, in which the filo dough layers were rolled into a cylinder with almonds, walnuts, and pecans. I found the amount of cinnamon to be too distractingly much and the rolling made the whole thing too dense--I missed the crunch of the many individual layers of filo.

They seem to still be in trial-and-error mode (Grand Opening in October), so I hope they don't end up toning things down for the greatest common denominator.
