at least until this new place on Columbus Ave. gets its house in order. Was looking forward to this place for some time and had a reservation this evening. A table for two at the door/waiting area provided blasts of cold air and bumps from the people clustered at the entrance. Some ten minutes passed before a "waiter" appeared and asked what we wanted to eat. We weren't asked about drinks or offered water. We ordered a squash/apple soup and squash fritters to start, followed by arctic char on dirty rice and a traditional jambalya. Ordered a beer to be served with appetizers--the beer never arrived. Had to ask for bread--but the stone cold cornbread and biscuits were insults to Southern cuisine. The very thin soup had a pronounced taste of apple vinegar and was inedible. Sent the soup back, but no apologies from waitstaff or suggestion for a replacement. The fritters, though perfectly fried, were tasteless. The main courses faired better, but the dirty rice with the char was overcooked and the jambalya was modest in size and ingredients. When we finally complained to another waiter about the service, the soup and the very unpleasant dining experience, the restaurant's manager appeared and stated she was genuinely sorry and that she was "running around like a chicken with its head cut off." And then she presented the check and told us she would "Comp" it. It was a very nice gesture, and not expected. There is potential here, but until the service and food issues are addressed, I would advise UWS hounds to walk a few blocks, spend a fist full of dollars more and have a wonderful evening at Dovetail.
