This afternoon after a delectable Din Tai Fung dumpling lunch at the Sheraton East I took a long walk throughout downtown to burn off all the dumpling calories I had ingested. After picking up a few of my beloved mustard green and hot and sour veggie bings at Unique, and collecting a few new restaurant menus, I decided to stop into the Mayflower food court on Main. In addition to all the usual stuff I always get there, I noticed something which for me was new or probably just always sold out when I'm there- on the top shelf of the first steam table place when you enter (the non-bakery side): MA LA BROCCOLI STALKS!!! Yum! Peeled broccoli stalks, sliced into thin two inch pieces in a mouth-numbing ma-la oil concoction....They are delightful and are even better with some of the oil poured off and an additional sprinkle of salt. I also noticed a spicy peanut and chopped bamboo shoot (?) combo that I'll try next time.
A very well spent $2.50. I would be seriously obese if I lived in the heart of downtown Flushing; I'd never cook :)
