Lye pretzel dogs - will the dog/sausage part be safe to eat, too?

I just made my first batch of baking soda pretzel dogs and while satisfying, they lacked the authentic pretzel taste and outer shell I prefer. I’d like to try the lye method now, but am wondering whether I can safely dip the dog portion into the lye. During baking, will the lye transform into something safely edible on the meat also?
