Manhattan Lunch

Restaurants & Bars 10

Went to lunch @ Union Sq. Cafe yesterday for the 1st time after a 24 year stint in NYC & was apalled! Ate the following:

Blood orange salad: very little of it's namesake and a cloyingly sweet sesame dressing

Sliced steak sandwich: this was masquerading as a gentrified philly cheese and for 19 bucks, was the meal's nadir. The sauce was so indistinct that it could've been Ragu, the meat unintersetingly overcooked, and overwhelmed by an imbalance of perfectly ordinary peppers & onions. I could've gotten an equally greasy but infinitely better version for 5-6 bucks elsewhere.

Key lime tart: ruined by the heavy whipped cream on top, which felt like it'd been settled there for too long. Like the sandwhich, a failed conglomeration of flavor and texture.

Even the wine sucked. It was a glass of Chinon that at $8.50, wasn't fit to reduce a sauce with.

The waiter was great however; he noticed that we left most of our sandwiches and brought the dessert on the house (albeit, he should have let us choose), & he took the wine away w/o a word of protest.

Hounders, was this a fluke, or is this institution slipping?
