After reading the Chowhound message boards for several weeks and debating on locations for an anniversary lunch for my wife and I between Troquet or The Loft (at the Montage), we decided on Troquet and loved every minute of it today.
We were seated at a table tucked in the corner of the outdoor patio and soon approached for our drink order. We ordered an ice tea and an Long Island and were offered our choice of breads -- sourdough, walnut, raisin, black olive or rosemary -- all of which were excellent. The rosemary was the favorite for both of us.
We started with a half-dozen oysters on the half shell and followed that with the serrano ham and arugala salad. It included carmelized figs and yellow watermelon and every bite exploded with freshness.
For entrees, we selected the "soup and sandwich" -- a grilled cheese with black truffles and tomato soup -- and the dayboat scallops with pommes puree and truffle oil. The four large scallops were cooked to perfection with a little carmelization that added just a little crunch to the incredibly tender meat. The grilled cheese wasn't extraordinary but was very good.
For dessert, we had the chocolate souffle accompanied by raisin and armagnac ice cream as well as the creme brulee with fresh berries. Both were delicious, the souffle very rich and the creme brulee loaded with specks of vanilla and incredibly creamy.
All told, we spent almost two hours in a beautiful setting enjoying a wonderful meal with topnotch service from start to finish. This is my first post here and I just wanted to say thanks to all the people whose threads helped us reach the decision to go to Troquet. Add my wife and I to the list of those who highly recommend Troquet. (Also, don't let the fact that's it's in "a mall" deter you -- while on the patio the rest of South Coast Plaza seemed to disappear.)
