Took a day off yesterday to do some shopping at the Short Hills mall. As I was googling the place I came across a link to the chowhound board about lunch in that area and somebody had suggested Scalini Fedeli. I was shocked to realize that it was only about 5 minutes from the mall.
We didn't dress up for the day of shopping, but when we got there at noonish we were shown to the best table in the house and treated fabulously.
We shared a seared tuna and wild greens salad and the porcini and truffle ravioli for starters and ended up using our bread to clean our plates of any stray sauce - they were both that good.
For our main course we decided to share both veal dishes, the scalopini and the milanese and again everything disappeared quickly and with gusto. I had recently taken the family back to Joe and Maggie's after a long absence and had the veal milanese there. The one at Scalini Fedeli made me wish I could take the chef from Joe and Maggie's there to see how to make this simple dish.
We shared a dessert made from chocolate filo and vanilla and chocolate cream drizzled with a fabulous caramel sauce and even after all that food we still lovingly fought over every spoonful.
Even with a nice tip we still ate for under $100 and it was worth every penny. Just out of curiousity I had looked at the menu at the Legal Seafood in the mall and, as I remembered, their prices were on a par with those at Scalini Fedeli. Although I have had some decent meals at Legal Seafood, yesterday's lunch at Scalini Fedeli was one worth remembering.
