I finally made it to Rinconcito Peruano and have been
back 4 times in the past
few weeks. Although dinner is great, esp. on weekends
when they have lots of fish the lunch specials are
great value, $6, and include soup, a main dish plate
which usually consists of a main
dish, beans and rice, and an oddly pleasnt sweet
barley water drink.
Most recently I went for an early lunch on Saturday
with Harry, my six year old,
bribing him with the promise that he could buy some
orange TicTacs from the
machine that they have in front. (A chowhound will
stoop very low for the cause.) I was esp. eager to go
on a weekend early to have Desayuno, or
breakfast, which offers all sorts of interesting
chazerei. When we got there,
they had already stopped serving desayuno, but it was
a lucky break. The soup
that day was one of the best I have ever had , chupe a
seafood soup. It was
lightly thickened with egg, but also had broken pieces
of poached egg in it,
which actuallywas rather elegant. It was seasoned
with lots of cilantro, and
based on a rich fish broth, with lots of fresh fish
(and not overcooked!) and
what looked like fingernail clippings, but the tiny
eyes gave them away --
miniscule dried
shrimp, but they were boiled until tender and had
given their flavor to
the broth. AMAZING!
The rest of lunch was good, if a bit of a letdown
from the epiphany of the soup
tasty lamb stew, nice porky pink beans, and rice.
If you find yourself in the neighborhood (8th between
53 and 54th) this place is
a must, esp. at lunch.
