I heard Kamps' grocery at 24th & Classen has new owners (again) so went there for lunch today to check up. I had an excellent curried chicken salad- big chunks of tender chicken and just enough dressing to hold it together, not goopy, on a thick bed of mixed greens, with a cup of exactly ripe apples cut in big cubes, two varieties, and grapes. And three strips of not-dried-out foccacia with tomatoes. Last time they just brought the salad, so the extra parts were a surprise. The time before that they never brought my food at all, so things are looking up.
The café uses meats from the Kamps meat counter just inches away (one of the two best meat markets in the city) and they do their own baking, including Hello Dollys with a slightly salty base, moister than Ingrid's on 38th but without the dipped chocolate edge. I noticed for the first time today that the grocery is selling take out boxes of four large balls of their cookie doughs ready to bake for $2.50. The grocery side is leaning towards trendy things like scorned woman cheese straws and kitchen gadgets but the produce, meats and bakery thankfully seem unchanged. Grocery side established 1910. (It's the only place my Aunt Esther will buy chicken)
