lunch from La Brea Bakery -- weekly report

Patty | Oct 1, 2003 07:12 PM

I have decided I need one decent, non-Atkins lunch a week, so last week and this I stopped at La Brea Bakery to pick up lunch. It certainly improves the first hour at the office (I don't start until 12). Last week, I had a ricotta and marinated artichoke sandwich on olive bread. I was hesitant at first because a ricotta sandwich seemed like it could be soggy and bland, but of course, not here. The artichoke hearts and olive bread were sufficiently pungent to liven up the ricotta and the ingredients blended together perfectly. Desert was a peanut butter cookie and a ginger cookie, both good but I think I could make better.
Today, I had them grill up a proscuitto and gruyere sandwich. Even a half hour later at the office, it was warm, greasy and sublime. A few cornichons would have elevated it even higher... Dessert was a chewy, slightly dry but still excellent pyramidal macaroon.
Does anyone have any other suggestions for sandwiches or desserts to try, or perhaps a bread/cheese pairing when I get tired of their sandwiches? Lately the service seems much friendlier, as well.
