Lunch at Flossie's

Every now and again I find myself having to go down to Torrance durring my lunch break. I always saw it as a chore… well this morning as I was rushing out and grabbing some frozen Homemade Chili for lunch, I had a flash thought… why not take advantage of my trip to go search out some good chow!! I put the Chili back in the freezer for another day and I decided to head down to Flossies…

Ever since Thi made his AWESOME report about the Fried Chicken at Flossies, I've been itching to go… I knew exactly what I was going to get… Fried Chicken, Greens, Mac N Cheese and some of the awesome Cobbler. I also knew it was cash only, so I made sure to have PLENTY on me…

Flossies is on Redondo Beach Blvd, I think technically in Lawndale… It's located in an old strip mall with plenty of parking. When you get in, you see quite a few small café tables and a steam table to the front. Automatically your eyes fixate on all the goodies on the steam table. YUMMM… then you look for the prices… and you don't really see any! Instead it's a large chalkboard that says all combos come with 1 main course, 3 side dishes (YES, 3!!), One dessert, and a drink… and far off in the corner you see one price… $9.99!! What a steal!! I got the Fried Chicken (Thigh and Wing), Greens, Corn and Okra, Mac N Cheese, Peach Cobbler for Dessert and a sweet tea… further, you also get a choice of Corn Bread Muffin or Biscuits!! I got the Corn Bread…

When I made it back to the office, I automatically tore into the foil pouch containing the corn bread… Inside where two little muffins of perfectly baked and fragrant cornbread. I took one bite and my knees became weak… the texture is soft, not mealy… not the slightest bit dry and they must brush them with butter (REAL butter!!) because the taste was out of this world… I WAS meaning to keep the other muffin for later… but I couldn't help myself… I ate both of them before even opening up my entrees…

Thi was SO right on about the Chicken… VERY crispy coating, not at all greasy and PERFECTLY cooked inside. This is ideal chicken for those Joey fans who love to eat their crispy chicken skin first… and then maybe later have some actual chicken… :D

The corn and okra was good… It was wonderfully spiced the Okra cooked to perfection. Not slimy one bit… the Corn on the other hand looked to be perhaps frozen. It wasn't as bad as those awful starchy sticky cafeteria corns, it was sweet, but not as nice and crisp like even most canned corns… I would have loved more Okra…

The greens were not bitter at all… but tangy and SPICY… again, wonderfully spiced. And the Mac N Cheese, this was REAL stuff… The cheese sauce was even slightly grainy looking (Not tasting!) just how I make it at home. The cheese flavor was strong, but so was the pepper… I loved getting half a spoonful of greens and another half of the Mac N Cheese… it was pure goodness all the way down…

The peach cobbler was still nice and warm by the time I finally gave it a try… The peaches, like the Okra, were a bit scant. But the crust of the cobbler was so good, so I didn't miss them too much! While this dessert was VERY sweet… it again, was spiced wonderfully (Nutmeg and perhaps clove!) so that it just wasn't a complete sugar shock when it hit the taste buds…

All in all… I HIGHLY recommend it! Again, good honest food (and a lot of it! Over half of it is waiting for me later!) for a great price…
