Lunch Adventures: LAX Taco... TRUCK!

Dommy! | Aug 2, 200505:55 PM

A few weeks ago I made the trek down to LAX tacos for lunch. I had a wonderful sope and a good burrito, but was alarmed to note that on their Tortas they sprinkled shredded ‘yellow’ cheese! ACK!!! Further, on the way down there, I saw a Mariscos Taco Truck, parked on Arbor Vitae near Isis. This truck had a CROWD, and I knew I was going to have to come back….

Well, yesterday I forgot my lunch (GAH!) and headed down to the truck with visions of yummy fried shrimp tacos in my head…

I arrived at around 1pm and the crowd was there as always. I looked at the menu and didn’t see Fried Shrimp Tacos listed. Boo hoo!! What I did see was a great selection of cocktails including my favorite, Octopus! And they had a heating chamber full of meats that you could see from the outside. The carnitas looked soft and lean, Yummm…. So I ordered a small Octopus Cocktail ($3.00) and a Carnitas Torta ($2.50)

Taking a look at other diners… the Ceviche looked standard to these trucks… like a fine shredded fish salsa (I’m a ceviche snob, I prefer BIG chunks of meat!). The tacos were large, but at $1.25, pretty standard. Also, the Burritos were very popular, and like the Torta, a GREAT price, $2.75. the most yummy looking thing to come out of the truck though, had to be the Tostada… full of meat and topped with lots of salsa, lettuce, sour cream and fresh made Guacamole at only $2.00! Lots of Mexican Sodas, no Mexican Coke, but Mexican Pepsi! Also, bakery/dessert items…

This truck was SO busy, it had 4 workers in the back!! One Cashier and all the rest scurring around cooking meat, prepping ingredients and assembling the food. Lots of great looking ingredients too… Buttery Avocados, good looking fresh shrimp, fresh made tostadas and salsas (Even their pickled carrots are home made!) But, be sure to ask for extras and exclusions. Not everything includes Avocado, Salsa or Guacamole…

As for my grub… The Torta was a bit on the small side, but VERY good. The Carnitas were indeed, soft and flavorful, not overly salty at all. It went perfect with the tomatoes and mayo… The best part however, was the bread, a super soft roll, toasted lightly. Really good…

The Octopus Cocktail was also really yummy. The big chunks of Octopus were cooked tender, not tough or chewy at all. So much better than the Octopus Cocktails I get from San Pedro Fish Market. The ‘broth’ was thin, but very flavorful I love soaking the tostadas in it. And there were several slices of perfect avocado floating around in it. Just like the Torta, because it was so cheap, it was a bit on the small side. I’d probably order a Medium ($5.00) Or Larger next time…

Again, this Truck is on Arbor Vitae right behind the airport along a small residential cross street called Isis. It’s appears to be a lunch only opperation and the clients are quite a cross section of folks. LAX Employees, Neighborhood Kids and Blue Collar Execs from the construction outfits surrounding the areas, and of course, now, one happy chowhound! :)
