I first visited Lunar Brewing in Villa Park about two years ago after I heard about it here. Ive been back a few times since and need to mention my opinion of their beers has gone up considerably. From the moment I first entered Lunar I loved the bar and they always had a nice selection of guest drafts and bottled beer. On my first visit I wasnt terribly impressed with their house-brewed beers; many had an off flavor.
Im happy to report I enjoyed their beers a lot the other day. I especially liked the IPA, with good body and a ton of hops. Also notable was the stout (very slightly sweet), the barleywine (fairly tame by barleywine standards but very hoppy), and the dubbel (not stylistically quite correct but still pleasant). If I lived anywhere close Id stop by a lot more often. Lunar also pours Old Potrero Single Malt Whiskey--a new favorite of many since last weeks bourbon tasting--for a very reasonable $7.50 a shot.
Just before Lunar I was at The Ram in Schaumburg where I had a sampler of all their beers. I wasnt at all impressed with any of these light-bodied corporate brews (its a multi-state chain). They ranged from nearly undrinkable (light, weissbier) to barely tolerable (pilsner, amber) to decent (porter). Another area brewpub to scratch off my list (actually they dont even brew on location). The contrast between Ram and Lunar was striking.
One more brewpub note. Todd Ashman, the brilliant head brewer at Flossmoor Station, has left for Titletown Brewing in Green Bay. I hope Flossmoor is able to maintain their very high standards in his absence. Last April Todd organized the First Annual Wood Aged Beer Festival, a small but great event. I was especially looking forward to the next one since the Real Ale Festival was cancelled. I wonder now if there will be another.
