Luling City Market Downhill Report

Mark DiBlasi | Apr 26, 2005 09:27 AM

I've been going to Luling pretty regularly for at least 20 years, although I don't live in Texas. It was at one time some of the best barbecue anywhere, but it's been in a sadly steady decline over the past 5-8 years, IMHO.

On a recent visit the brisket was kind of dry and flat tasting (both "lean" and "half and half" slices), the ribs, which used to be juicy and kind of firm were just dry, and that sweeet glaze, which used to kind of snap when you bit in to it, was just mushy. The sausage was good, but not anywhere near Kreuz Market quality. This has been my taste experince on the last 3-4 visits.

What's the deal with this place? When you walk in it seems exactly as it always was, but the 'q has really taken a nosedive.
