I had a Groupon for Plate 38 in Pasadena that was expiring yesterday. I needed to use it. So I arrived at 11am. After debating between breakfast and lunch, I decided to go for breakfast, since chances were I would be able to get there for lunch before I would be able to get back for breakfast.
My eyes settled on the L&B plate (actually, it was the fried capers that caught my eye). I placed my order (it does not usually come with cream cheese, but I ordered it with) and asked for extra capers. Iced tea and a fabulous-looking raspberry coffee cake muffin completed my order (the muffin is currently in my fridge waiting for morning). Came to $17 and change.
Took my number and chose an outside table. Plates arrived pretty quickly. On the smaller plate, a perfectly-toasted plain bagel and some butter and cream cheese, On the larger plate, beautifully displayed - very generous amount of salmon, three thin slices of cucumber, three slices of yellow heirloom tomatoes with the dream-inspiring fried capers (c'mon, I will usually order anything if it comes with capers, but FRIED??!! How can you go wrong? Well, here you can't!). Thinly-shaved red onion and a lightly-dressed arrugula salad. It was gorgeous.
But, the taste was even better! Seemed that the cucumbers were lightly salted and the fried capers were salted. The lox was delicious and there was plenty of it. It was perfection on 2 plates. I thought it a very good value at $9.75. Service was friendly. The place was busy - only about 5 tables were available when I left. I cannot wait to go back and try the roasted tomato soup with four cheese prosciutto panini. Hell, I cannot wait to go back and work my way through the menu. This will definitely be on top of my radar when I am thinking good food. I will also need to try the burger that Will Owen sang the praises of here recently. I cannot wait!!
