I go to and host my fair share of dinner parties featuring lovely but somewhat refined meals and desserts test evoke oooos and ahs, but I always wonder if that is what people really want. Sometimes I wonder how people would react to appetizers of Ritz and Kaukana cheese instead of Manchego and figs, a main course of King Ranch casserole instead of those miso lime scallops, a salad of iceberg and thousand island instead of spring greens with a Champagne vinaigrette, and ice cream sodas instead of a quark and Marion berry tart for dessert. ...or maybe frozen pot pies or ham steak in fruit cocktail accompanied by Kraft M & C, followed by Sara Lee chocolate cake. It would all be washed down with whiskey sours or daiquiris instead of some overthought wine. Of course I never will, but sometimes I wonder.
