For my special birthday, I wanted to go somewhere small, friendly, attractive - and of course delicious.
We had the usual great time at August, at 13th and Wharton.
The menu is not large, which is smart; whatever they do, they do very well. Our appetizers were the beet salad (always great), romaine salad, and the unusual spring rolls. I passed on my favorite tuna appetizer because I had just had tuna for lunch.
The pastas are always excellent. Our friends had the gnocchi special, and they loved it. My husband and I both had the bronzino special - pan seared, and served over a basmati risotti and adorned with asparagus. Wonderful!
Other entrees we love at August are the tilapia (their presentation is great), the pork chop, the filet - we've never been disappointed.
When I called for a reservation, I requested my favorite dessert - the coconut custard pie, which makes my mouth water just thinking about it. My husband had the pumpkin pie and our friends had the coffee over ice cream - I just went blank on what this is called, but it is another favorite. The pies are freshly home-baked.
We are fortunate to have so many good restaurants in Philly at this time. Although we like to try new places, there are a few that hold a special attraction for us and make us want to return time and time again.
August is certainly one of them. I'm ready for my next visit!
