I know, it is a chain, and not considered a "better chain" at that. Last night, after working a very long two-day show, my mother and I stopped for dinner at Joe's Crab Shack in Indianapolis.
We were expecting a decent meal with lively, predictable atmosphere. We've eaten at Joe's before and have never been either overwhelmed or terribly disappointed. For Midwest seafood, it's been fine.
Last night was fantastic though!
We shared a "steam pot" with their new "fire grilled seasoning" on our waitresses recommendation. The crab was tasty and cooked just right. (I used to live in Miami and New Orleans, and my mom is from California - we do know how crab should be cooked!). The seasoning had a little bit of heat, but not overwhelming, and surprisingly was not super salty. It was actually so delicious I found myself licking my fingers and hands! Not something I normally do.
We shared a dessert of their berry cobbler, which was fresh out of the oven. Not reheated, but actually fresh made and among the best cobblers I've ever had. The berries were not sweetened, but were good, so it wasn't cloying, and the biscuit type topping wasn't sweet at all! The ice cream (regular plain generic vanilla) was nothing to remember, but it went with the cobbler very well, and our server was spot on.
She refilled our drinks promptly, explained the (very short) delay in our dessert service (as they were making a new batch of cobblers right then), and always had a smile.
Really, it was a very nice experience. The whole meal more than exceeded our expectations and if this is the new normal for Joe's Crab Shack, I think it will be part of my "rotation" more often.
So, I guess I have to turn in my foodie card now. :)
