Daniel Mochon wrote about Los Hornitos in his Poughkeepsie Journal column last month. It's a bakery/breakfast/lunch joint run by a Chilean couple new to the Hudson Valley. Sounded irresistable, had to seek it out.
Tried their creamy potato lentil soup and their signature steak sandwich. Both were delicious. The steak sandwich was tender slices of what tasted like rib-eye served with sliced tomatoes, mayo, mashed avocado and a chedder-like cheese, on a billowy house-baked roll. On the side you get a dollop of this tabasco-ey pepper and onion salsa, an excellent counterpoint to the richness of the avocado, mayo and cheese. The only steak sandwich I've had to rival this is the one served by the White House in Atlantic City.
My gal had a lunch plate - fried chicken cutlet with white rice and some of the smokiest, most tender, red beans north of New Orleans. Just perfectly cooked. Ultimate comfort food.
We shared a piece of tres leches cake for dessert. No cheap commercial bakery ingredients here. Real cream and butter. Fresh strawberries. Delightful.
The owner, Monica, is a very talented baker and cook and a total sweetheart of a gal. She and her husband are from Chile, which has a heavy German influence in its cuisine, but Monica enjoys cooking the favorite foods of the expanding Hispanic community in Dutchess County. So there are fried plantains on the menu, roast pork, tropical smoothies... I can't wait to go back. The food is so good and the prices so reasonable, if I lived in over Dutchess, this would be my lunch joint.
It's in the Dutchess Shopping Center, a strip mall anchored by a Dunkin Donuts, on the east side of Rte 9 in Wappingers. Just south of the Poughkeepsie malls.
