Thanks to an older Chowhound tip and some additional online verification I had Los Dos Hermanos on my radar for our after backpack outing to Lakes Basin in Plumas National Forest.
It's in the small roadside town of Sierraville - maybe 25 miles NW of Truckee on Highway 89.
A classic Mexican Menu - combination plates with rice and beans with a bit of lettuce/salad included. Generous amounts of cheese melted on many items. The kind of comfort food that I always look forward to when I'm on a road trip. Soccer is playing on the TV above the bar. Locals come in and are greeted by name. Beers come soon after ordering but no agua fresca so I go for Dr. Pepper. ( free refills if you need one) It's early for dinner ( 4:45pm ) so there are only a few other tables occupied.......our waiter is friendly and attentive. Food comes out quickly - plates are generous to say the least. Maybe our stomachs have shrunk after a few days of trail dining but none of us can finish our plates. My chile verde reminds me of good home cooking - big chunks of tender pork with some celery & carrots? in a mild green sauce ....... somewhat straight forward, not too jazzed up but good in a simple honest way. The fish taco is available a la carte and comes on a small plate with a lot of lettuce and some lime. The fish is griddled? ( not deep fried ) and well seasoned. Most plates run about $9-11 ........ and are big enough to share. I'd go back next time I'm back in the area.
