I like trying new places and always try to support the non-chain restaurants in my neck of the woods. So when I saw this new restaurant on Guess Road I thought I'd try it for lunch.
The curious thing about this place is that it is owned and run by a Pakistani couple! Pakistani's running a Mexican restaurant? Only in America, LOL! However, I did notice two Mexican ladies doing the cooking.
The restaurant is very spartan so forget anout ambience. I tried a chicken gordita, a beef burrito, and I got one each of cheese, chicken, and beef empenada to go. I was the only person in the place and it still took a long time to get the food. The wait was mostly worth it however. The gordita was a hot, freshly fried thick disk of masa with shredded chicken, lettuce, tomato, pico the gallo, sour cream, and guacamole. Quite tasty and a relative bargain. The burrito was not so good: too much rice and lettuce led to a lack of flavor. The empenadas were delicious. In brief, I think anything cornmeal based item it likely to be a good choice.
I wish them the best but I fear the worst. There is a glut of Mexican restaurants in Durham. I would think they would depend partially on a Hispanic clientele to succeed. Question is, will Hispanics chose a Pakistani run establishment over a Mexican owned one? Doubt it.
