Tell me about long pepper!

I bought some long pepper after reading about it here. I've eaten little bites off the end of one and like the flavor, but I'm not sure how best to proceed with getting them ready to use in cooking. The ones I have are pretty solid, like a peppercorn only a lot bigger- they'd be tough to mince by hand. Any suggestions?
