Long Island: Pupuserias

Brian Q | Jan 12, 2002 12:46 AM

I've been on a bit of a pupusa kick the last few months, and have hit a few places already and know of a few others I need to try.

I usually get the same thing in each place: a couple of different pupusas, a corn tamale, and an horchata (which seems a bit more 'nutty' than Mexican horchata).

The places I've tried are:

Ana's Kitchen
15 West Sunrise Highway
Freeport, NY 11520
(516) 868-1358

Brisas Del Mar
70 Church Street
Freeport, NY 11520
(516) 546-6023

And also one in Glen Cove on Glen Street just east of School Street (I think...I can't find the menu or business card).

I've liked the pupusas best at Ana's, though Brisas Del Mar is a close second. The corn tamales were also good at both, but I think Brisas Del Mar wins this one. Brisas Del Mar is a pupuseria but also specializes in seafood, which I haven't tried yet.

The place in Glen Cove was OK, but not great and I haven't been back since the first time.

I also know of Pupuseria Melissa on Route 110 in Huntington Station, Albertino's on Merrick Road in Freeport, and Rincon Gunaco on Oak Street in Copiague was also mentioned on here some time ago.

There were some posts about Don Paco's in Carle Place awhile back, but I've never figured out where it is. There's a pupuseria on Hempstead Turnpike in Franklin Square called Paco's that I've driven past. Is this the place people were talking about, or is there actually another pupuseria in Carle Place?

Any other suggestions or pointers for LI pupusas would be greatly appreciated.
