how long do corks last?

What is a typical lifetime of a cork in a bottle?

The reason I am asking is my friend accumulated some nice Napa Cabs from the 80-ties, some even from early 90-ties and when he brought them to us to have with a dinner pretty much all of them had very spongy corks - you could feel it how the cork opener went into them like through a butter, obviously the wines inside were way past their prime, air leakage probably did them in. I don't think he had a cellar but he kept them in the horizontal position. So I wonder about those fancy, very expensive bottles of red wine locked in a cabinet in my local K&L Wines, some from the 60, 70-ies, etc, how many of them can still be any good.
