at long last, Alan Wong's and Malassadas!

Finally, my girlfriend's wedding arrived and we were all off to Hawaii for a week or (for the lucky few) more.

Every morning, before starting on the errands, she stopped off at Leonard's and brought me hot malassadas. Or we had fried eggs, rice, and portuguese sausage at Wailana Coffee House. The shower was at The Willows where they have a little buffet with kahlua pig, dobash cake, fried haupia, make your own saimin, lomi lomi (minimal) salmon, hot and cold noodles, poi, and teriyaki and more. I wouldn't say it was the very best I've ever had of each dish, but it was a great way to at least sample all the things I had been missing all these years. Lunch another day at Kua'aina burgers in Ward Center. Sorry Apple Pan, I'm going to have to knock you down to my second favorite burger. I asked for a side of teri sauce and poured it all over my pineapple burger. Juciness defined! Another lunch was at Sam Choy's - a cousin works there. The fried tofu was perfect and it's crazy how I can get so nostalgic over two scoops of rice and one scoop of macaroni salad.

It was a miracle that we could fit into our dresses!

Then, on Sunday, after we hugged and kissed the happy couple goodbye and as they headed to the big island, we drove up to Waimea to sleep on the beach and recover. That night, we got gussied up (my boyfriend tucked in his shirt) and went to Alan Wong's. I was in such a delirium! And it wasn't just the lychee cocktail. I swear. Out of curiosity, we ordered the tamarind shrimp tacos (the shell was fried won ton) with salsa and refried taro. The shrimp was so fresh and all of the flavors perfectly balanced! We had a composed salad with rare ahi and basil. My boyfriend laughed at my sigh and blissful facial expression. For a main course, I had the thai butter lobster with hearts of palm and capellini - usually eager to share, I only gave my boyfriend one bite. It was rich, but the lobster was tender. My boyfriend ordered the furikake crusted salmon with green tea risotto. When served, the waiter asked if he wanted green tea. My boyfriend said yes, and the waiter poured freshly french pressed green tea from the french press into his bowl of risotto.

Stuffed, we ventured on into the realm of desserts. We could only order one (because of our stuffed state) - it was the banofee pie. In a wispy chocolate cylinder sat a mousse-like banana coffee substance on a lightly salty macademia nut crust with a little scoop of what I think may have been kona coffee ice cream. Heaven!
