Various errands have called me to New London lately, and I've been driving around noting places of interest. There seem to be lots of storefront ethnic eateries popping up...saw a neon sign on Colman St. saying "West Indian Cuisine"...and there's a Mexican restaurant called El Sombrero that I've heard is great...and an Italian bakery that I haven't caught open yet...and a wholesale produce market. I have yet to check these places out myself, but wanted to give a heads-up that it may be worth exploring. I'll report back when I get a chance.
Now, I HAVE checked out one fantastic, non-restaurant place in New London: the recently opened DFO ("Discount Food Outlet"). It is what it calls itself -- a discount grocery store -- but the real surprise is their amazing selection of ethnic/gourmet groceries. All kinds of unusual produce, spice blends, teas and coffees, candy, local specialities from all over the US and the world....with a particular emphasis on Jamaican/West Indian and hispanic foods. It's an adventure to go shopping there. I guarantee you'll find some intriguing treasure.
