Longtime lurker here, lucky enough to get a week in London at short notice and in need of a recommendation or two. The archives have more than gotten me started on places to eat and drink (thank you to everyone who has contributed), but Ill be going out to dinner with a friend one night. Although she just moved there, Im probably better informed, but would like to narrow it down.
It should be unpretentious (important), great food (should go without saying), not outrageously expensive (under 75 a head with wine), and with a good pub nearby for a drink beforehand. Ill be staying in Islington (having shamefully neglected the north and east of London on past trips), so in the vicinity would be good, but isn't crucial.
Now, on to the drinking. Ive got to try the Wenlock Arms, but since I may be on my own when is a good time of day (or night)? I just love a dusty old dive, especially if the beer is great, but grotty old boozers are not always the friendliest place for a woman to go solo.
Not About Food: Im arriving on New Years Day. How is the Parade? Where is a good place to view it? Any good design or architecture related exhibits besides the Design Museum and V&A?
Thanks in advance and rest assured that in return I will start coughing up my recommendations for the Hamptons and Long Island on the Tri-State board as soon as I get home.
Happy New Year-
