I was passing through downtown Natick on Main Street when I saw the enticing name - Lola's - and jogged over to check it out - with a name like Lola...
It's a nice little cafe, a number of Italian specialties from off-site - olive oils, balsamics, cookies, pastas, etc. They also have a freezer case with off-site frozen pastas as well as take-out containers of their on-site prepared meals, such as chicken parm, lasagna, etc.
For lunch, they have a selection of hot and cold subs -
I tried the small Vegitalian, which consisted of grilled eggplant, marinated artichoke hearts, roasted red peppers and mozz. The small was a full-size sub as far as I could tell, and it was packed with ingredients
- The eggplant clearly was made there - sliced extremely thin, grill marks, etc.
- The roasted reds also tasted homemade - they were not overly oily and were much firmer than ones out of the jar
- the artichokes I can't vouch for certain, but I think they must have been from a supplier in order to have them all year - The chokes were somehow odd in the sandwich - if you don't like the taste of marinated artichoke hearts, don't get them because they dominate the other ingredients.
I also asked that they add a little tomato sauce to the sandwich, but they only had a meat sauce, so if you are a strict vegetarian, careful.
Topped it off with a delish dark creme soda from a Berkshires-based soda company - the name escapes me...
Might be worth your while to check it out - the chicken parms in the case looked well pounded thin and breaded - will check out a meat-based sub on the next pass.
