Just made a quick visit to both Kreuz and Smitty's, and happy to report that both were absolutely fine.
I had been to the original Kreuz many times, and it seems like the family feud has been a good thing for barbecue lovers. Superb shoulder clod at both places, terrific sausage at Smitty's, very excellent brisket at Smitty's, a great pork chop at Kreuz. I remember the original Kreuz having not very good brisket, so this is an improvement.
Had the "German potatoes" at Kreuz-cubed potatos steam/fried with bbq cutting board trimming bits and lots of black pepper. A very distant cousin to the bbq hash of South Carolina, and highly reccomended.
Looks like barbecue in Lockhart is doing well, and even evolving, despite the publicity.
