So last night the wife and I were walking around Tribeca. We'd flown up from home (Fla.) earlier in the day. We were looking at the menu posted out front of Bar Artisanal. Guy with a dog walks up to us and says this place is good, but the best spot in neighborhood is Locanda Verde.
I have been seeing Bar Artisanal in the press for years so I wanted to try it. We went in for a drink and a flatbread. The whole experience was mediocre.
We went to Locanda Verde. We had a couple of drinks at the bar and got a table after 45 or so pleasant minutes.
WOW -- LV now replaces Balthazar as our go-to place when we come to NY. What made a huge difference was the fresh air. All the huge windows were open to the sidewalk. It was cool. We were sitting on the west side basking in the setting sun over NJ. It wasn't so loud as we had read (prob because of the open windows). It wasn't so crowded as we had read (prob because of the sidewalk seating). Billion dollar setting, ambience, conviviality.
Food was totally outstanding: nuts at bar, filleted sardines, lamb pasta, homemade duck sausage pasta, sorbet.
Bartenders were okay. Waiter was pretty lame. And, yes, it is annoying to insist that we order everything at once. To counteract this next time will delay and delay ordering.
Can't wait to go back!
