Locanda Olmo (Berkeley) report

Joel Teller | Aug 8, 2004 08:58 PM

Four of us had a nice dinner at Locanda Olmo on College Ave in the Elmwood district of Berkeley. This place has been around for several years, but is under new ownership since last year -- we met one of the owners, a very effusive fellow from Tuscany. The food is all Tuscan, and very extensive for such a small place.

We started with a salad:
Fagiolata 8.50 (Beans, parsley, fresh tomatoes, mozzarella, onions). Pleasant, not too exciting.

Cozze Affogate 10.00 (Fresh mussels poached in white wine, garlic and fresh herbs; served with garlic bread). Very tasty, rather salty broth, good sopped up with the bread. They make their own bread.
Cipollata 8.00 (Caramelized onions, capers and feta cheese; served on slices of roasted eggplant). Tasty but expensive for what was there.

Main dishes:
Risotto "Mattia" with tomatos (on the daily specials). Very nice strong tomato flavor.
Ravioli ai Funghi 14.50 (Ravioli filled with cheese with a wild mushroom, fresh herbs and parmigiano sauce). Rich and very tasty.
Scaloppine ai Funghi 16.50 (Pork loin scaloppine with a mushroom, marsala wine sauce, extra virgin olive oil) Came with roasted potatoes and vegetables. My friend ordered the pork "well done" -- it was rather dry, but the vegetable accompaniments were OK.

Desserts: Both were excellent , and I am not a dessert fan in general. They make all their own desserts here.
Budino di Mele 6.50 (Apple bread pudding served hot with a maple-Brandy sauce). Sweet, very rich.
Panna Cotta 7.00 (Italian style “baked cream” topped with berries; glazed with burnt sugar.). Superb texture -- soft and creamy.

We brought in two special bottles of wine (corkage is $10 per bottle). They serve sparkling water from a pitcher instead of regular tap water -- very nice touch.

Comfortable, cozy décor, excellent service. A nice neighborhood place that we enjoy, partly because we can walk to it.
