Locanda del Ghiottone Review

Jersey City Mods | Jan 30, 2006 08:22 AM

A group of three of us went to Locanda del Ghiottone Saturday night and we absolutely loved it.

First thing's first however. You may not be aware that they now take reservations. Fortunately we went at 6pm and were informed we could either eat "right now" or at 9:30 pm. We chose the "right now" option.

They started us off with a free appetizer of bread and this egglplant dip which was similar to Baba Ganoush but much better I thought.

Three of us also split an appetizer of mussels (it was quite large) in a reddish sauce with toasted bread soaking underneath.

We also got the Osso Bucco special (which was actually lamb served with a saffron risotto); the fresh "squid ink" pasta with seafood; and the Bronzini which was a whole fish fileted at the table. The fish also came with a side of Broccoli Rabe which was the best I have ever tasted.

This is a good place to go if you like a totally chaotic atmosphere (which we do). Actually our server asked to make sure his aunt didn't offend us by telling us we would have to leave by 7:30 (we actually were allowed to stay longer as the reservation they had must have been for 8pm). Considering we were just walk-ins I said it was not a problem but that the next time I would make a reservation. I would definitely go back.

I usually think Italian foode is too American but this place had me believing I was on vacation somewhere.

I was actually trying to figure out exactly which region they were from as I was thinking Naples (or perhaps even Sicily). Just curious?
