Local Peasant - The good and the bad

I have now been to the Local Peasant in Sherman Oaks a few times and am ready to dish the chow. Maybe I should say that I am ready to diss the chow. I recently had the pork belly. Small cubes of crispy goodness on top of spicy taramind sauce. This dish was garnished with fresh watermellon cubes, some peppery microgreens, and some picked watermellon rind. It was delicious and well prepared. Unfortunately this is the ONLY item I have have enjoyed over several visits. I have by no means tasted everything on their menu but have already seen enough.

During the same trip to LP, I had the burratta, beet, and heirloom tomato salad. Liar, Liar, pants on fire Local Peasant. Those are not heirloom tomatos in my salad. And they are not even ripe. This is tomato season for the love of God! Since I have had so many renditions of this dish at other places, I didn't think that you could screw it up. WRONG! The salad was over dressed, the burratta a stingy portion, and the beets presented in pieces way too big. Who is doing the prep in your kitchen? I left this half uneaten and the bartender, nice as he was, was not even curious enough to ask me what the issue was.

Another time at LP, I had the short ribs and butternut squash. Tasteless. A little salt and pepper goes a long way. It makes me think that no one is actually tasting what they are cooking.

Finally, during a birthday party in the back room I had a chance to taste several sides including the mac and cheese. Not a fan! On the plus side however, they did a lovely job renovating the old Cozy's space and the crowd it draws is pretty fun. Just remember to eat before you come. My next installment, if I manage to get over this carpal tunnel, is about their sister resturant Black Market Liquor in Studio City.
