As we end Healthy Soils Week 2020 in California, this is a good time to watch "Living Soil", a documentary about the importance of safeguarding soil health.
“Educating consumers about the on-farm and environmental benefits of healthy soils can help create more demand for food, fiber, and fuel grown using soil health systems. The Living Soil documentary was created and produced with that goal in mind, so we can achieve the many environmental benefits of healthy soils at a much grander scale,” said Dr. Wayne Honeycutt, President and CEO of the Soil Health Institute. “We thank everyone who has viewed and especially shared the documentary. My only ask is this: Please keep it up!”
It made me think about my late uncle was was a working, conventional farmer in the Salinas Valley, active in soil conservation efforts in the 1970s. I found this interview with him published in July 1980 in a "Soil and Conservation News" issue that talks about saving topsoil, cover crops and no-till methods. I was really struck by the fact that now 40 years later, these practices have not been adopted by the majority of farms.
