Livermore: Not half bad tacos

Shep | Jul 14, 200506:09 PM

At El Charro on First Street, I had no expectations. What I got was two plump tacos in small corn tortillas, well stuffed with meat and topped with a drizzle of salsa and a few chopped onions. As usual, I added nothing except a couple squeezes of lime. The carnitas were moist and had a lot of pork flavor; the few (very few) beans under the pile of meat added a nice bottom note and texture. The chorizo came in decent size chunks, rather than the granulated form one sometimes gets; the flavor was meaty as well as spicy. After finishing both tacos, I had the equivalent of a third taco in "fallout", which I mixed with the plenty hot salsa cruda from the salsa bar, and scooped up with the free chips.

No horchata today; the aguas were lime and hibiscus, which latter I selected. It was flower-tasty and a little sweeter than I prefer, but a couple squeezes of lime fixed that.

El Charro has a breakfast menu which they serve all day, including machaca with eggs, and both red and green chilaquiles. Looking around, I noticed a number of diners enjoying nice sized bowls of soup; I saw four different caldos on the menu, plus menudo.

At $1.85 per taco plus my $2.50 large agua, I felt well lunched. The extensive menu gives me plenty of cause to return.
