Went to hamano last saturday, and they had not run out of live uni by the time we got there. Live uni is much much sweeter than regular uni, which ages fast and sometimes taste a bit of ammonium. The only other place I had seen it so far was ebisu. But ebisu only had it as a special, and it seems hamano now has it regularly. Plus ebisu charged $17 for it, while hamano's was $12.95. Both serve it with the shell, so you can toy with it, it still moves. Hamano also had live scallop, with the lips served in a little cute roll, and the meat as a nigiri. Our dinner there cost us $80 for 2, for 12 items plus drinks (sushi plus cooked dishes plus the best homemade tofu ever), but we ordered very richly. The homemade tofu was more like a custard, very creamy, with sun dried tomatoes. I would not order tofu myself, but my dining companion was from Japan and she wanted to try it. Ironically, she did not care much for the sun dried tomatoes and I ended up like the whole dish better.
Afterwards, we took a look at the new fresca, on 24th, looked quite happening, still busy at 11pm.
