Lion's Head Meatballs

Had them (3 for $10 but I only ate one then)at Wing's Kitchen in Boston last night, prepared in a dark sauce, surrounded by the cabbage. It was my first time trying the dish. It seemed prepared well I guess, but kind of boring. Am I missing something? Is it better with hotpot/part of a soup?
