Our visit to the beach towns of San Luis Obispo County in May 2017 started off with a rib-sticking hearty breakfast at lil' Bits Cafe in Grover Beach.

Breakfast is served all day. It was fun to sit at the counter and exchange pleasantries with the short order cook on a slow week day.

For me, "I Don't Care for Eggs", $9.99, half-order of biscuits and gravy, breakfast links, and home fries. I liked the crusty char on the links and the whipped up sausage gravy was pretty tasty and heavy on black pepper.

The cafe is known for its homemade strawberry jam. The cook suggested that I try it with the B&G even if it seemed weird to combine sweet with savory. I did, and kind of liked it. Extra points for griddling the split biscuit in butter for golden brown, crunchy edges.

William ordered the "Chorizo & Eggs w/Tortilla", $10.99. The chorizo's housemade with pork shoulder and on the lean side, and served scrambled with eggs. The home fries had bits of onion and bell pepper mingled with the skin-on, waxy red potatoes and lots of well-browned pieces. The potatoes are all-you-can-eat but one serving was more than enough for either of us.

The cafe serves up an incendiary, smoky hot salsa and sells it by the jar too. But you have to ask for it. Try a little on your eggs if you dare.

This was a tasty and bountiful breakfast, the kind that makes you want to get back in bed for a nap.

I was sorry that I couldn't try the homemade corned beef hash or the chicken fried steak, as this seems like the kind of place that would do those right. Who else has tried lil' Bits?
