Low Lighting Food Photo Tips

I'm super novice when it comes to taking quick pics of my food at restaurants.

I'm going to a low lighting restaurant tonight for a nice tasting menu. I'd like to take some photos with my Canon SD770 point-and-shoot without using flash.

I'm not looking to take crazy quality photos, but just better photos than if my camera mode was left on default settings with no flash.

I've heard that using macro mode is a start. Anything else I can do? Thanks!
