We were down at West Dean gardens at the weekend and stopped at the Lickfold Inn, its near Midhurst for dinner on the way back as previously ( 2 years ago mind ) we had had a great meal there.
First of all, for a foodie pub on a Sunday night it was dead only about 8-10 others dining.
The food itself was good food that wasnt quite up to scratch. It gave me the impression that the basics were done well but the combinations in the dishes were naive and adding a large sprig of parsley is not finishing.
The dessert we attempted was char-grilled banana with chocolate sauce and coconut ice cream. It was appalling. I dont think charring the outside of an unripe unpeeled banana helps it and the chocolate sauce tasted like cocoa powder, a pity really as the starters and mains were much better.
I am a bit worried as it really looks like it is on the way down. I suppose trying to run this type of pub in a very small village in what is surprisingly a very rural situation is going to be difficult. Does anyone know it? care to comment?
