So, I happened to be in Bernal Heights this morning, and stopped in to the Liberty Cafe's "bakery cottage" for a hot-from-the-oven apple turnover. Mmmmmm. I usually get there too late on the weekends, after they've already run out. However, since I got there just after they'd opened this morning, there were plenty of baked goodies to be had. The turnovers are very buttery and flaky, encrusted with crunchy crystals of baker's sugar and filled with tender, soft-sweet slices of apple. Liberty Cafe is on Cortland at Wool--the cottage is behind the restaurant. While I was there, I noticed that the windows of the Hungarian Sausage Factory (not a factory, but a small restaurant) across the street were papered over, and it looked very closed. Anyone know the scoop? Mission Villa, a longtime Mission Mexican place, has also closed.
