Two weeks ago, I had a chance to drop in on the tap take-over at The Libertine Pub. The pub is attached to the Embarcadero Grill and you can order food from there to eat in the bar though a customer on the way out talked us out of doing so.
Mostly Firestone on tap, I shared a sampler of four brews that were new to me. Top picks were from Figueroa, both the Black Cone IPA and Hurricane Deck had more complexity and interest to float our boat. Neutral on Telegraph Bourbon Porter. Thumbs down on Ventura Surf Brew Oil Pier Porter that tasted like burning crude oil and moldy yogurt.
But star of the tasting was the Firestone Walker Reserve cask porter with vanilla bean. The tap, shown below, has just been installed the day before. Mellow, round and deep, robust personality.
