Mrs. Mousse and I just wasted an evening at Bistro Liaison. The food was sub par. The service wasn't much to speak of either.
The meal began on a low note when we were served stale bread and butter. The bread was clearly sliced several hours prior. The dab of butter was hardly enough for one piece of bread, which didn't matter because we wont eat stale bread.
The French Onion Soup was passable. The cheese crust on mine was broken and sunk in, so the presentation was bad. Mrs. Mousse makes a far better French Onion Soup at home. This was the only decent dish of the evening.
The Beef Bourguignon was very disappointing. I love stew meats but this was just not prepared well. The meat was tough and stringy; the texture was all wrong. The flavor was bland and boring. I couldn't finish my plate and I didn't take home the leftovers (very unlike me).
The Leg of Lamb special was equally unimpressive. I'm a lamb fiend, I order lamb everywhere I go and this was some of the most mediocre lamb I've had. These folks are either using poor quality meats or poor preparation techniques, probably both.
After two poor entrees I don't know why we decided to order dessert. I should have been skeptical about any place serving an apple tart in July. It was one of the worst fruit tarts I've ever had. The apples were gelatinous and syrupy. The true taste and texture of the apple was destroyed. I suspect that they may even use canned fruit. The fruit was mushy, and had the flavor of bad liqueur. The crust was soggy. Bleh!
For most of the meal there was a very drunk woman next to us talking loudly and obscenely on a cell phone. Her conversation lasted about 30 minutes! The servers made no effort to silence her or quiet her down. Although our server apologized after the woman left, they made no effort to make it up to us with a comped drink or dessert.
The cost of the meal (2 bowls soup, 2 entrees, 1 dessert, no drinks) was $80 (tax and tip inclusive). We were robbed. You can get a vastly superior meal at Le Theatre for the same price. You can get a far better meal at Gregoire for half the price. I will never return to Liaison Bistro, and I advise all ChowHounds to avoid it.
p.s. No possibility of an "off-night," it was Friday.
