Yesterday I was walking past this Tibetan restaurant (the only one is SF as far as I know) and noticed a sidewalk sign promoting "$7 lunch special, Thurs. & Fri. only". It had been a couple years since my last visit and I decided to stop in. Maybe I wanted to return to my first taste of momos after trying the Nepalese version in Santa Rosa.
The lunch special menu offered a dozen-plus entrees with and without meat. In addition to the entree you get a small plate of Himalayan salad plus a cup of soup for your $7. I picked the beef/cheese soup and the beef momos, plus ordered a cup of bocha. The soup was thin and indistinguished and seemed rancid, but maybe that's how it's supposed to be. The salad of chopped carrots, daikon, tomatoes, red onions, garlic and scallions was fresh and tasty with a citrusy marinade. But be careful, some of those cubes are fresh ginger! The beef momos were accompanied by a soy ginger dipping sauce. Very juicy with thick but tender wrap, the momo flavors were direct and pure with beef and fresh basil. And, sorry to disappoint, but the bocha is made with cow's butter, not yak butter.
