Having not eaten at L'Express in perhaps 10-15 years, and then only for lunch, I was thrilled to dine there Saturday night with two friends. Despite the prime hour and evening, service was exemplary, with water glasses constantly refilled, wine topped up, bread replaced - this may be the most typical French bistro in Canada but the attentiveness of the waiters is 100% than that in France !
The food was delicious and generously portioned: great slabs of foie gras presented with toasts, an exemplary steak tartare, wonderful lamb with a textbook potato gratin - good desserts but, only disappointment, the floating island was sold out !
We are partial to amarone - a gutsy young (2000) vintage proved just the thing on the waiter's recommendation, and was served at French room temperature "frais", exactly what it needed - for a mere $70 !
Three cheers to the chef and staff for giving us such an exemplary evening.
